On the MacOSX version I tested (and for which the bug was reported), the _file extension_ was stripped always. Clearly, this is a bug and needs to be worked around.

But Wayne reported the same as you: that the bug was fixed in the meantime.

However, I am at a loss how to find out _which_ version of Java on MacOSX had the bug fixed. I tried to pry this information from Apple's website for several hours, without luck. If you could help me by finding out, that would be smashing!

I don't expect that this will be very helpful since you're probably already aware of it, but here is a release notes page for Apple Java versions:

The issue of inconvenience remains, but this is not a critical bug.

Sorry, I should have been more clear: I am only prepared to invest time to solve this bug if you are prepared to invest as much time as I already did. So: as soon as you tell me what version of Java for MacOSX fixed the extension-stripping bug, I will add the appropriate code and let you test and then publish the fixed version.

So I am a moron and I spent another 2 hours on this issue, without any outside help.

To my defense: I happened to get a computer with MacOSX 10.7.1 installed, so it is natural to get tempted to see whether the problem persists.

The big problem is that this problem is not solvable, thanks to Apple's fantastic Java support. Let me illustrate why:

When I load the Blobs example and try to save as TIFF, I indeed see "blobs.tif.stripThis". But when I change the code not to append the ".stripThis", I only see "blobs". Worse: the FileDialog checks for the very same file name (_without_ ".tif" suffix!) in the overwrite check!

Therefore I tried to append a known suffix, ".tif". In effect, I set the file name to "blobs.tif.tif" in the vain hope that MacOSX' FileDialog would only strip the latter. But what it actually does is to strip _both_ suffixes. Ending up with the same "blobs" file name without proper extension.

Now, I could remove the ".stripThis", but most users would think that they do not need to add the proper suffix themselves. Indeed, this was the very reason I put that code there: a real user (a quite bright scientist) saved some images as TIFF files and was unable to load the same files into PowerPoint (which requires the proper extension).

So I am afraid that I'd rather err by adding a ".stripThis" extension than have confused users who think that the computer is clever and does not show them the ".tif" extension. Sorry.

I talked with Johannes a bit about this issue, and it really is pretty nasty to fix. However, one workaround to this issue is to go to Edit > Options > Input/Output and check the "Use JFileChooser to open/save" box. Then the problem does not occur, but you have to deal with the less featureful Swing file chooser.

Does the recent bugfix in ImageJ 1.45o change anything regarding this issue??

"Thanks to Gilles Carpentier, fixed a bug that sometimes caused images with extra periods in their names to be saved without an extension."

I talked to users who were rather confused by the ".stripThis" extension that appears whenever they save a results table (.xls.stripThis), a new script (.ijm.stripThis), etc.
and I'm afraid that this change adds more confusion than it solves...

Use Help>Update ImageJ to upgrade to ImageJ 1.45p. It does not append "stripThis" to default file names and it does not allow files to be overwritten without asking.
