Description Bill Christens-Barry 2012-07-13 22:16:07 CDT
The Fiji Java Webstart stable version, linked to on the page at:

  http://fiji.sc/wiki/index.php/Downloads

fails during launch.

After the app is downloaded by the browser, and after the user allows the application "Fiji via Web Start" to launch, a dialog appears indicating "Unable to launch the application", which is again identified as "Fiji via Web Start". Clicking the dialog "Details" button produces a further explanatory dialog that contains this text:

   Found unsigned entry in resource:
      Error: http://download.java.net/media/java3d/webstart/release/j3d/1.5.2/j3dcore.jar

and some more information in "Launch File" and "Exception" tabs.

The same behavior occurs if the Fiji-stable.jnlp file is manually launched in the OS by the user.

Apparently Oracle no longer signs this jar (http://www.java.net/forum/topic/javadesktop/java-desktop-technologies/java-3d/unsigned-entry-j3dcorejar#comment-818570).

This behavior was observed on Mac OS 10.7.4 and Windows 7 using various browsers and where other jnlps successfully run.

For the moment, WebStart is unsupported. This will only change if there is enough demand to warrant the immense effort required to reinstate it.
