you always get a composite image when using Image - Color - Merge Channels ...
regardless of the state of the checkbox for composite yes or no.

This bug is fixed in ImageJ 1.43l1. It only occurred when merging 4 channels. The fix, in ij/plugin/RGBStackMerge.java, is available at <ij/plugin/RGBStackMerge.java>.

I cherry-picked that commit, and uploaded a new ij.jar (use Help>Update Fiji to update).
