Cannot start the fiji.app in 7/28 build under OS 10.3.9. Launcher starts up then shuts down right away.

Hi - could you try the following two things and send us the results?

(a) Try starting Fiji.app/Contents/MacOS/fiji-macosx from a Mac OS terminal and see if there's any output. If there's a crash log, please attach it to a futher comment here.

(b) Have a look in the Mac OS console to see if there is any output there - similarly post it here if so. (The console is in Applications / Utilities, if I recall correctly.)

many thanks,
mark

I strongly suspect that this is a MacOSX 10.3 issue, as we compile Fiji for MacOSX 10.4 and later. As far as I remember, the problem is that there is no Java5 or later available for MacOSX 10.3.

Just to test, can you please download http://pacific.mpi-cbg.de/downloads/snapshots/fiji-macosx-10.3.dmg and try to launch it?

1. tried the console suggestions -> there is no console output when i run fiji
2. tried opening in terminal -> get a "Bus error"
3. tried that 10.3 download-> same issues, doesn't start.

Any other suggestions?

I really appreciate your work!

Unfortunately, without ssh access to a 10.3 machine I will be not able to figure out what is going on...

Well, seems like MacOSX 10.3 is stuck with Java 1.4 (AKA Java2). Of course, it took me 15 minutes to find out what you could have done in half a minute.

So I fear we cannot support MacOSX 10.3, as we need Java 1.5 (AKA Java5).

Okay, so I found Retrotranslator, which should allow us to go quite a way with OS X < 10.4... Could you please retry with this temporary release?

Okay, seems I am the only one who tested it. It works here (with the notable exception of Java3D).
