In the "Edit - Hide/Show" submenu, there could be another entry to toggle the visibility of a floating text label with the name of an object in 3D, overlaid over the object and scale-independent. The text should always be rendered readable, i.e. not rotated in space.

A hot key would toggle on/off all floating labels.

Requested by Volker Hartenstein.

Nice idea, but sadly there is no one to work on it. At least not in the immediate future.

As an aside, the VisAD API supports "screen locked renderers" where you can do stuff like that. Perhaps some day -- once we get past the architectural issues of ImageJ2 and spend more time on visualization challenges again -- these APIs will come closer together.
